Seahawks GM Tim Ruskell Steps Down
The Seattle Seahawks announced that general manager Tim Ruskell would be stepping down at a news conference on Thursday.
“Obviously there’s great sadness today but I will leave here with great memories of this place and the people. It’s been the people for me,” Ruskell said.
Ruskell, in the final year of a five-year contract, recognized the Seahawks’ reluctance to commit to him for the long-term, and decided to make it easier on everyone by stepping down now.
“We were getting ready to go into those meetings about free agency and the offseason,” Ruskell said. “If I am not going to spearhead those meetings and it wasn’t going to happen no matter what our record was, you become a lame duck. And I did not want that.”
Ruskell arrived before the 2005 season, a year in which the Seahawks rallied around Matt Hasselbeck to make a trip to the franchise’s only trip to the Super Bowl ever.
But the Seahawks have fallen by the wayside as of late, with an 8-19 record since the beginning of last season. With coach Mike Holmgren retiring from the team last year and being replaced by former Falcons coach, Jim Mora Jr., the Seahawks decided to make even more changes in the administration.
