Seahawks Withstand QB Smith’s Career Day, Win 17-14 on Last-Second FG

With RB Frank Gore complaining about his reduced role in Mike Singletary’s offense, the Seahawks feared retribution from Gore, as the Niners ran for nearly 300 yards earlier this season in their first meeting with the Seahawks.

Instead, the Seahawks had to stomach Niners QB Alex Smith’s career passing day, as he threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, but the ‘Hawks escaped with the 17-14 win after Olindo Mare kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired.

“It’s a load off when they take care of one of our problems for us. It was … beautiful,” Seattle rookie outside linebacker Aaron Curry said.

Gore, who ran for 202 yards in the first meeting against the Seahawks, was limited to nine carries for 25 yards on Sunday.

“Any time you play a team that rushes for almost 300 yards, why not do that again — or at least attempt to?” Curry said.

Seahawks coach Jim Mora said of Gore: “I’m glad he didn’t have the ball more.”

Instead, the ‘Hawks got to watch QB Matt Hasselbeck go to work – after not throwing a touchdown in the Seahawks’ last two games, Hasselbeck threw two on Sunday.

The Hawks and Niners moved to 5-7 on the season, likely crushing both teams’ playoff hopes. They’re both three games behind the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC’s Wild Card spots.
